What to do for a Patient Suffering from Spine Pain
Pain management experts usually have long lists of patients who wish to have their spinal pain sorted out once and for all. This is normal. Many people suffer from back pain at any given time. There is no other cause of most of the disability cases in the entire world. When you help your patients to find ways to make the pain go away, they shall appreciate this more. Such pain tends to have a huge impact in the quality of their daily lives.
People treat pain in different ways. You will therefore need to be familiar with all the pain management techniques that are on offer. There are three main methods you can use.
The conservative technique allows you to see the patient for an hour a week. You shall get to do a lot for the patient within this hour. But they need to understand that the management goes beyond this hour and well into their life outside. Patients are thus advised to employ the conservative techniques. They have at their disposal activities like aerobic exercise, swimming, Pilates, yoga, and cycling. These are cardiovascular exercises that have been shown to offer great physical and mental health benefits. These exercises are also easy on the back. Yoga and Pilates also build muscles, improve flexibility and improve your balance. They end up with a strong spine. These methods work for anyone with mild spine pain. Severe pain cases cannot perform these exercises.
Mind techniques are based on the idea that your pain is mostly in the mental sphere. Therefore, some mind techniques can be applied to solve this. You can focus your attention to a nonpainful part of your body. You can also disassociate our mind from the body. You can imagine yourself receiving a numbing anesthesia injection. The same technique can be used when thinking of receiving a painkiller. You can also think of a pleasant place or time.
There are other minimally invasive techniques you can consider. Acupuncture is a similar technique. It leads to more circulation in those areas. Facet injections can lead to a longer period of pain relief, when injections to the facet joint stops pain being communicated in the body. As epidural steroid injections are injected into the epidural, inflammations reduce. Cryotherapy involves the sending of a cold mist through the body, where it shall be left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
You will notice it is hard to manage to find a good method of pain management for your patients. The pain one patient feels is different from another. You need to put some effort into finding the right one for each.
